Still Waters, Watchful Eyes

Beneath the sun-dappled surface of the pond, a silent sentinel keeps watch. The eyes of the marsh frog, with their golden irises and unwavering stare, are among the most distinctive in the amphibian world.

Pelophylax ridibundus thrives in warm, still waters across Europe. Its mottled green skin blends effortlessly with its surroundings, providing camouflage both from predators above and prey below. Ever alert, it can disappear in an instant, leaving behind only a ripple on the water’s surface.

Though solitary by nature, during the breeding season their chorus can be deafening—a remarkable transformation from stealth to spectacle.
