Symmetry in the Light

With wings outstretched like ancient sails, the great cormorant dries its feathers in the soft afternoon light. Unlike most waterbirds, its plumage is not fully waterproof—an adaptation that helps it dive deeper, but necessitates these striking displays to restore balance. Here, in perfect symmetry, it becomes both sentinel and sculpture.
