Feathers and Rivalry

As the afternoon light begins to soften, the male blackbird pauses—head tilted, feathers puffed. Around him, the world is restless with spring. He’s alert now. A rival may be near, or perhaps a female watching from the shadows. In this season, even stillness is a statement.
