Getting a portrait shot of a great cormorant is no easy task. These birds are notoriously shy, often taking flight long before a photographer can get close. Usually, they prefer to fish in open water, making it challenging to capture detailed in-water portraits. However, the frozen waters at Floridsdorfer Wasserpark created an unusual opportunity\u2014forced into a smaller, unfrozen area to fish, the cormorants had no choice but to come closer than usual. This allowed for a rare and intimate in-water portrait, capturing every detail of its striking emerald eyes, wet feathers, and powerful beak.
